Ready or not, the holidays are coming. Truth be told, I'm a bit “Scrooge-y” during the holidays. So many gifts to buy, people to see, food to cook, cookies to bake, decorating to do, and holiday spirit to locate....I'm exhausted just thinking about it! The funny thing is that I expected there to be a Love Your Dog Day and a Love Your Cat Day-- you know, like Mother's Day. But it turns out, there are many obscure and unusual pet holidays, just as there are human holidays. Did you know that January 20th is National Cheese Lover Day? That's pretty much every day at my house. There's also No Politics Day (hallelujah!), Barbershop Quartet Day (why?), and I Forgot Day (story of my life). But I digress....let's talk about the holidays that honor our fur babies:
November is National Senior Pet Month and National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. LOVE this. Young dogs are cute, but older animals need our love, too, and really, make amazing family pets. All the heart eyes for November.
December is rockin' it with National Mutt Day on the 2nd of the month. I love all dogs, but loving a mutt is special. And, quite frankly, I'm a bit of a mutt myself!
January is National Train Your Dog Month! If you've read my other blogs, you know I approve. Other notable days in January include:
January 14th is National Dress Up Your Pet Day. I must say, that I'm a dressing up your pet convert. I used to think that it was an awfully ridiculous thing to do (and maybe it still is), but darn it, it's cute, and often hilarious.
January 22nd is a head-scratcher: National Answer Your Cat's Question Day. I have no words, but it was too wacky not to include here. You're welcome.
February is a BIG month for pets. It's Cat Health Month, but most importantly, it's The Humane Society's National Spay/ Neuter Month. They even have a Spay/ Neuter Day, which is February 27th. I keep hearing Bob Barker of “The Price is Right” in my head, encouraging us to have our pets spayed and neutered! Ha! But, Bobby B. and The Humane Society certainly have the right idea.
March may be my favorite yet, because it has-- drumroll please-- Professional Pet Sitters Week! This year, it's March 4th – 11th. In case you were wondering, I like chocolate!
April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, aptly started by the ASPCA. And to balance out that importance and seriousness of that, there's April 27th, National Hairball Awareness Day. You think I'm making this up, right? That's why I'm posting my source at the bottom of this blog. It's for REAL!
May has a National Purebred Day AND a Mayday for Mutts. Equality for all in May!
June is Adopt a Cat Month (awesome), and has a National Hug Your Cat Day. As if most cats will just let you hug them? Preposterous! I LOVE cats, but I'm pretty certain most of them don't love hugs. On June 4th, I double dog dare you to hug your cat. Let me know how it turns out.
July is National Dog House Repair Month. As if we want to repair dog houses in the SUMMER! I vote we move this to October. Who's with me?
August 5th is Work Like A Dog Day.....which, quite frankly, is every weekday, right? August 18th is National Homeless Pets Day. Sniffle. Pass the tissues.
September 23rd is Dogs in Politics Day. So, we recognize the dogs of politicians, for what....being more honest than their owners? In WAY more important news, September 28th is World Rabies Day. Yeah, let's focus on something we can actually fix, right?!
October is Adopt a Dog and Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. I knew I loved October for reasons other than Halloween! Excellent, EXCELLENT idea.
Believe it or not, these are just the tip of the Animal Holiday iceberg. And I highly recommend you check out the web site on bizarre human holidays for a good laugh. We are one strange species! Happy Holidays!
