Dog treats are great to have around to help with training and for just showing your dog some appreciation and love. We all want what's best for our dogs nutritionally, and there are certainly some great dog treats out there that you can buy. But with the holidays coming up, you'll probably be doing some holiday baking, and why not have some fun making some yummy dog treats as well? I've found a recipe that's simple to make with inexpensive fixings. There are no weird ingredients to buy that you'll use a tablespoon of, leaving you with quart of useless leftovers. Who comes up with those recipes, anyway?! I found this recipe online, after being unhappy with the stickiness of the first dog treat recipe dough I found. This version has more flour in the dough, making it the perfect consistency. After reading the reviews on the recipe, I doubled the peanut butter and pumpkin. Great advice from fellow dog treat gourmets! I also omitted the ½ teaspoon of salt in the original recipe, because why do dogs need more salt? This recipe made 93 silver dollar sized dog treats for me. Easy to make with your kids and dogs LOVE them!
Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats
INGREDIENTS:
2½ cups whole wheat flour (I used All Purpose because that's what I had)
2 eggs
4 tablespoons of peanut butter
1 cup canned pumpkin
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients. You can add water if you need to make the dough workable, but you want it to be dry and stiff. I didn't need to add any water. Here is where I differed from the recipe: I rolled out the dough and used a star cookie cutter to make the dog treats. You can also do it as the recipe suggests, which is to roll the dough into a 1/2-inch thick roll and cut it into 1/2-inch pieces. If you want to get SUPER fancy, you can use a toothpick in the unbaked dough to write the dog's name or make designs. This would be a great gift for a dog-loving friend! Either way, bake for 35-40 minutes, until the treats are hard. I like to line my pan with parchment paper. Your delicious dog treats are ready! As a bonus, your house will smell like Fall when the treats are baking. And since they have no preservatives, I recommend storing your dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
