Every day, you leave for work, and there's that face-- the adorable, sweet, loving, loyal, completely non-judgemental face of your furry best friend-- sending you off. You can't wait until that face greets you upon your return. But, until those 8 or so hours have passed, you have trusted your dog walker to care for your dog. Dog walker, dog handler, pet sitter.....all names for the person who loves your dog just as much as you do.
Your dog handler's car is undoubtedly decorated with dog hair and “Chuck-its”, doggy treats and water jugs, poop bags and wet wipes. Anyone getting into a dog walker's car for the first time might smell that distinctive doggy smell. But, that's not what WE smell! Our cars (which have no human food in it, because let's face it, the dogs will be ALL over that), smell like love. They smell like puppy kisses. Like fresh grass stuck to little paws.
Our cars take us to your homes in Palo Alto, or Menlo Park, or Atherton....a beautiful place to walk or go on a doggy play date, with mountain views, sunshine, and blue skies. And the best part of our day? When we open your front door, side gate, or doggy crate and are greeted with wagging tails, sloppy kisses, and barks of joy. Your dog cannot contain her enthusiasm when she sees her dog handler. She KNOWS what is about to happen. We get the leash from the usual spot, talk to your baby, give them love, all the while wishing that humans were always this excited to see us.
And then we walk. Well, we walk a few steps, and pause. And repeat. Because in a dog's world, smells are of monumental importance; acorns, leaves, food crumbs, bugs, grass, dirt, trees, sign posts, and everything in between is worth a smell. And wouldn't it be amazing if smelling all things organic and inorganic was all it took to make us humans feel content, happy, and peaceful? What a wonderful world it would be indeed.
When we finally make it back home, your dog looks at us with adoring eyes. Their eyes say “thank you”, and “I love you”, and “can I have a treat now?”. And they tell us to come back. Always to come back. When we leave, we have dirt on our shoes, dog hair on our jeans, and slobber on our hands. And we wouldn't have it any other way. See you tomorrow!
